Healthy Trail Boss Hot Chocolate

Writer's picture: Keith J StewartKeith J Stewart

In our house, when the girls were young, I always loved making them a cup of hot chocolate before we sat down for a movie. It became one of those little traditions—something simple, but it meant a lot to them (and to me). These days, we’re a little more health-conscious, so we’ve swapped out the store-bought powder for a recipe that’s just as comforting but made with wholesome, natural ingredients.

This hot chocolate recipe, we've dubbed "Trail Boss Hot Chocolate", is one we whip up when we’ve got the time to enjoy the process. It’s creamy, rich, and packed with healthy ingredients like cacao and Cowboy Colostrum, making it a real treat that doesn’t just taste good—it’s good for you too.

We’ve really come to love Cowboy Colostrum for its ability to support gut health, immunity, and overall wellness. It’s easy to mix into more than just hot chocolate—add it to your coffee, smoothies, yogurt, or even other drinks for a boost. If you’re interested in giving it a try, you can use code COWBOY15 at checkout to save 15% off. Trust me, once you’ve tried it, you’ll see why it’s a staple in our kitchen. When we’re in a hurry, we also love High-Vibe Health’s Chocobroth or Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate Bone Broth. They’re quick and easy—just heat them up in a pot on the stove, and they’re ready to go. And of course, we’ll stir in some colostrum once it’s cooled, because we know the extra benefits are worth it. Whether you’ve got a little time or need something fast, there’s nothing like a warm mug in your hands, especially on a chilly evening.

Ingredients (Serves 1-2):

  • 2 cups whole or raw goat’s milk (or your favourite milk alternative)

  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cacao powder (for a rich, chocolatey flavour and antioxidants)

  • 2-3 tsp maple syrup or raw honey (adjust sweetness to taste)

  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract (optional, for extra warmth)

  • 1/8 tsp ground cinnamon (optional, for a subtle spice)

  • 1 heaping scoop of Cowboy Colostrum (per package directions)

  • Pinch of Celtic sea salt (to enhance flavours)

Instructions:

  1. Heat the milk: In a small saucepan over medium heat, gently warm the goat’s milk. Be careful not to let it boil; just heat until it’s steaming.

  2. Mix the base: In a small bowl, whisk together the cacao powder, maple syrup (or honey), vanilla extract, cinnamon, and sea salt to form a smooth paste. This helps avoid clumps in the hot chocolate.

  3. Combine and whisk: Slowly whisk the cacao mixture into the warm milk until fully combined and silky smooth.

  4. Add Cowboy Colostrum: Once the hot chocolate has slightly cooled (just warm to touch, not hot enough to damage nutrients), stir in the Cowboy Colostrum until dissolved. Use the Cowboy Colostrum rechargeable double whisk frother for best results.

  5. Serve: Pour into your favourite mug, top with optional toppings, and enjoy the creamy, nutrient-packed goodness.

Optional Toppings:

  • Shaved dark chocolate (70% or higher)

  • A sprinkle of cinnamon or cacao powder

  • Coconut whipped cream for a creamy topper

Why You'll Love It:

  • Goat’s milk is rich in nutrients and easier to digest than cow’s milk.

  • Cacao provides antioxidants and mood-boosting properties.

  • Cowboy Colostrum supports gut health, immunity, and overall wellness.

  • Maple syrup or honey adds natural sweetness without refined sugar.

This recipe is the perfect blend of indulgence and health, combining the creamy richness of goat’s milk with the powerful benefits of Cowboy Colostrum. Whether you’re starting your day or winding down after working horses, it’s a drink you’ll keep coming back to.
